Ants, Atomic bombs & Hollywood

Back in the 1950s there were several Hollywood movies that featured giant insects. One of those movies (Them!) is a classic about ants mutating into giants after exposure to nuclear radiation. It was a box office hit!

Conventional wisdom says these movies played on peoples fear of nuclear bombs and the cold war. Maybe that’s true but I reckon something else was at play. Check out this video and see if you agree with me.

Fear and loathing

It happened one day at primary school back in the 1960’s. “It’s biting me, it’s biting me!!” the boy screamed as he sprinted past me. He then collapsed on the ground in flamboyant B-grade movie style, shrieking loudly. I ran up to him and could see the culprit clinging to his leg, a very large but harmless moth which I now know it to be one of the ‘rain moths’ of the family Hepialidae (below).
